Sri Lanka, an island nation owing to a rich history. Farming, and growing with day to day life, holds utmost importance. Traditional knowledge is a living body of knowledge, skills and practices that are developed, sustained and passed on from generation to generation within a community which are forming a part of a people’s cultural and spiritual identity. Traditional knowledge on cultivation practices are most important and valuable thing for planting banana. Other species pest and disease management, medicinal value associated with traditional, local plants and practices is prevalent seen amongst traditional knowledge in Sri Lanka.

Banana Planting/ Sri Lankan Banana and Planting.

Sri Lankan Banana and Planting basically a tropical crop which grows well in a temperature range of 15ºC – 35ºC with a relative humidity of 75-85%that plant is well growing in dry area around Sri Lanka (Embilipitiya,Sooriya wewa etc). Which prefers tropical humid lowlands which is growing from the sea level to an elevation of 1500m in Sri lanka, Farmers is cultivating in climate ranging from humid tropical to dry mild subtropics through a selection of appropriate varieties. Chilling injury occurs at a temperature below 12ºC. The high velocity of wind which exceeds 80 km /hr. damages the crop. Four months of monsoon (June to September) with an average 650-750 mm. rainfall is most important for vigorous vegetative growth of banana. At higher altitudes, banana cultivation has few varieties like ‘Hill banana”.
